July 2 - Attorney Susan V. Happ, who announced her candidacy for Jefferson County District Attorney this past February, says she has “reset” her campaign strategy in light of the recent announcement by long-time incumbent David Wambach that he was quitting to join the Justice Department. Immediately after Wambach’s announcement, Peter Tempelis, the most junior assistant district attorney in that office, announced he would seek election as Jefferson County District Attorney in Wambach’s place on the November 4, 2008 ballot. July 21 - Susan Happ has released a list of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, attorneys, and community leaders who have endorsed her candidacy. The impressive list of endorsers includes two current Jefferson County Assistant District Attorneys -- Tris Baker and Brookellen Teuber – as well as Jefferson County Child Support Agency Director Elaine Richmond. Other endorsers include Town of Lake Mills Police Chief Robert Delaney, Town of Lake Mills Supervisor Tom Berns, recently retired Fort Atkinson Municipal Court Judge, John Lampert, former Jefferson Mayor Collin Stevens, and former Jefferson Mayor and current Alderman William Brandel. Letter By Jim Claas, retired police officer - August 5 - I read with amusement David Wambach’s endorsement of his chosen successor for Jefferson County District Attorney. Mr. Wambach’s protégé, just two years out of law school, has a poor record of gaining convictions.
In 2007, he lost 4 of 9 jury trials. One trial he “won” that year was vacated on appeal and dismissed. 2007 success rate: 44 percent. Read more...

Letter By Dave Drayna, Vice President of the Local 102 - Susan Happ ... received the endorsement of two prominent unions directly linked to local law enforcement -- the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Officers’ Association Local 102 and the Wisconsin County Police Association. To understand the magnitude of these endorsements, you must first understand that these endorsements are unprecedented – they have never been given in a District Attorney’s race. Never. Letter by Victor Long, Sept. 25- I just wanted to write and say how impressed I am with Susan Happ and her list of endorsers who support her candidacy for district attorney. I have never seen so many people in law enforcement, the legal community and community leaders support any candidate. This isn’t just anybody who endorsed her. You’ve got two assistant district attorneys in that office, 3 police chiefs, 8 detectives, 17 deputies, 4 sergeants and so many more. Read more... |

Letter by Atty. Raymond Krek, Sept. 29 - I recently received a mailed pamphlet supporting outgoing District Attorney Wambach’s selected candidate to succeed him. It is visually attractive and the cost to mail it to almost all of the voters of Jefferson County must have been in the tens of thousands of dollars. It contains no thoughtful reason for electing the young Assistant District Attorney with two years of undistinguished performance versus his highly-qualified opponent Susan Happ. Read more... |

Letter by Atty. Michael Witt, Sept. 29 - This past weekend, however, I received a mailing from candidate Peter Tempelis which
compels me to speak out. In that mailing, he implicitly demeans attorneys like myself, and his
opponent, Susan Happ, for fulfilling our constitutionally mandated roles in our adversary system
of criminal justice. Read more... |

Letter by James Follensbee, August 22 - I have been watching with interest the race for Jefferson County District Attorney, which began when Sue Happ announced her candidacy six months ago. I must admit I’ve been watching Sue Happ for most of her life. ... We couldn’t have a better or more qualified candidate than Sue. ... Sue has been endorsed by two current Jefferson County Assistant District Attorneys, former District Attorney Linda Larson, countless local law enforcement officers, two prominent law enforcement unions and countless community leaders. Letter by Donald Grosskopf - David Wambach recently wrote a letter to the editor supporting his chosen successor for District Attorney claiming conviction rates are not a benchmark for prosecution skills in the courtroom. This goes against common sense, but is understandable in light of his young protégé’s poor trial record. According to Mr. Wambach’s 2007 Annual Report, Peter Tempelis lost 4 of the 9 files he took to trial in 2007 and one of his convictions was dismissed after appeal, resulting in a meager conviction rate of 44%. Letter by Kathleen O'Neill, October 7 - I have been reading with interest, amusement and sheer frustration the accusations that Attorney Susan Happ is unqualified to be our next District Attorney because she has worked as a defense attorney. I rebut those who think that defense work automatically disqualifies someone from working in areas of the court system which deal with enforcement and prosecution. I would remind them that our current Branch IV judge, Randy Koschnick, was not only a long time public defender, but the head of that very office here in Jefferson County. . Read more... |

Letter by Lawrence Lee, October 10 - I have personally observed ADA Peter Tempelis in court and feel that with Peter Tempelis as DA, the Jefferson County DA’s Office would not be in a good position to successfully prosecute cases and obtain convictions of criminals. Letter by Assistant District Attorney Tris Baker - I’ve been an attorney for 28 years and for the past 16 years I’ve had the privilege of being an Assistant DA for Jefferson County. I write this letter to the editor (the first in my life) because of a strong conviction that Attorney Susan Happ is the superior candidate for DA. I am concerned that the choreographed campaign to elect her opponent will mislead some into thinking that her opponent’s paper credentials are sufficient to handle this very demanding job. They are not. Read more... |
